All educational and vocational program applicants must take the Test for Adult Basic Education (TABE) first.

 

TEST FOR ADULT BASIC EDUCATION (TABE) TESTING: All incoming inmates are offered the opportunity to take the TABE in the Orientation Unit.


• Funded by the Plymouth County Sheriff’s Department.

 

ADULT LITERACY PROGRAM: This program is available to all sentenced inmates who are illiterate in English and are unable to function in Adult Basic Education classes. They also have a specific need for one-on-one tutoring.


• Volunteer Literacy Tutors donate their time to work with individual inmates.


• The length of this program is for as long as the need exists.

 

ADULT BASIC EDUCATION (ABE): Two groups are available to inmates who, based on the TABE test results, fall within a designated score range. Inmates cannot have a high school diploma or a General Education Diploma (GED).


• Funded by the Massachusetts Department of Education (DOE) ABE Grant.


• Each class meets three times per week.

 

PRE-ADULT SECONDARY EDUCATION (Pre-ASE)(Pre-GED): Two groups are available to any inmate who does not have a high school diploma or a GED and who, based on TABE test results, falls within a designated score range.


• Funded by a DOE Grant.


• Each class meets three times per week.

 

ADULT SECONDARY EDUCATION (ASE)(GED): This class is available to any inmate requesting an educational program who does not have a high school diploma or a GED and who, based on TABE test results, falls within a designated score range.


• Funded by a DOE Grant.


• Class meets three times per week.

 

TITLE I: This is a remedial class for inmates who are age 21 and under. The services of the Title I teacher are available to students who need remedial work in the areas of math, reading, and language and do not have their high school diploma or a GED.


• Federal funding received from the DOE and dispersed through the Department of Corrections (DOC) to the Plymouth County Correctional Facility (PCCF).


• The amount awarded determines the number of classes being held.

SPECIAL EDUCATION (SPED): Based on academics, this class is designed for inmates who enter the facility with an Individual Education Plan (IEP), indicating that they are a special needs student. It is available to inmates under 22 years of age and who do not have their high school diploma or a GED.


• The Commonwealth of Massachusetts hires the Educational Collaborative Organization (E.D.C.O./E.S.I.S.) to provide educational services to inmates.


• Class meets five times per week.

 

RUFO: This literacy class is designed for inmates whose test scores fall within a designated score range in math, reading, and/or language. A high school diploma or a GED is required.


• Funded by the Plymouth County Sheriff’s Department.

 

ENGLISH SPEAKERS OF OTHER LANGUAGES (ESOL): This class is designed for non-English speaking inmates to learn the English language.


• Funded by the Plymouth County Sheriff’s Department.


• Class meets weekly for as long as the need exists.
