FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL FOR NEW PLYMOUTH COUNTY K-9s
Four Czechoslovakian freshman pups reported to class this week at the Plymouth County Sheriff’s Department. On their first day, with tongues wagging- Cedar, Cicil, Rony, and Britan had a leg up on their new deputy handlers. But that won’t last long. Over the next 16 weeks, the new K-9s will raise their paws at the deputy’s command.
Lt. Mark Correia has eight years experience as a trainer and 15 as a handler. Assessing the new class- he says his pupils are “extremely outgoing, confident dogs.” Training focuses on the K-9s for the first semester—the second semester is team focused—K-9s and handlers must execute practical scenarios. “From freshman pups they’ll mature into four-legged fences capable of patrolling the Plymouth County Correctional Facility, recovering evidence, and apprehending criminals,” said Sheriff Joseph D. McDonald, Jr. Cedar, Cicil, Rony and Britan do have other classmates; also in the training class are K-9s and handlers from Melrose and Wakefield Police and two from the Middlesex County Sheriff’s Department. On graduation day, the four new Plymouth County K-9 teams will join six other experienced teams at the department. SEE ALL PCSD K-9 TEAMS
